Talk by Geraldine Duignan – 'The Monto' : Dublin's Darker Side 1860 - 1925. Mallow

Event: Talk by Geraldine Duignan – 'The Monto' : Dublin's Darker Side 1860 - 1925.

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 January 2025 at 20:00

Location: Mallow GAA Complex, Carrigoon, Mallow, Co. Cork. P51 XV58.

Additional Information: Organised by Mallow Field Club, Geraldine Duignan, ATGI Tour Guide, will give a talk on ‘The Monto’.

All welcome.

Monto was the nickname for the one-time red light district in Dublin. It was roughly the area bounded by today’s Talbot Street, Amiens Street, Gardiner Street and Seán McDermott Street (formerly Gloucester Street). The name is derived from Montgomery Street (now called Foley Street), which runs parallel to the lower end of Talbot Street towards what is now Connolly Station

As far back as the early 1800’s, this area was noted for its ‘great number of destitute poor, dissolute and depraved characters’ of both sexes. The Mecklenburgh/Montgomery district of the city, north-east of the Custom House, marked the infamous ‘Monto’ district. After the 1870s women began to move into cheaper accommodation available in the Lower Mecklenburgh Street area eventually rented out the flats in the Georgian houses and turning them into brothels.

In its heyday from the 1860s – 1920s, there were anything up to 1,600 prostitutes working there at any one time, with all classes of customers catered for. It was reputed to be the biggest red light district in Europe at the time. Its financial viability was aided by the number of British Army barracks and hence soldiers in the city, notably the Royal Barracks, later Collins Barracks.

Cork Arts Theatre Call for submission of short plays

'Views from a Deckchair'

Short Play Event - Call for Submissions...

Submission Deadline: Monday 2nd March 2026

Grab a deckchair and a pen! We’re calling for original ten-minute plays for our 'Views from a Deckchair' event. Of course, the deckchair is not just somewhere to sit, it’s where secrets spill, worlds are watched, arguments erupt, or lives quietly change.

The deckchair must be an integral part of the story - not just a prop, but a place where action, reflection, conflict, or revelation occurs. What is seen, thrashed out, overheard, or imagined from the chair?

The deckchair could be anywhere - on a sunny beach, a back garden, a balcony, a cruise ship, a holiday camp, a picnic site, a city rooftop - or somewhere entirely surprising. In fact, anywhere a deckchair doesn’t quite belong is especially encouraged.

Plays with comedy, drama, whimsy, tension and the wonderfully unexpected are all welcome.

Surprise us with what unfolds once the play (and the chair) opens!

Here are some important guidelines to bear in mind:

  • We will actually have 2 Deckchairs available! Other stage furniture will be kept to a minimum (6 black cubes - 2ft square - will fill in for all other elements - bench, seat, wall, etc.).

  • Plays should be no more than 10 minutes in duration. Other than that, we are open to plays of all genres.

  • As per previous years, all submissions will be read by our panel of readers, a shortlist compiled, and 10 of those plays selected by our directors. Those 10 plays will then be staged during our performance week which will take place from Tuesday 28th April to Saturday 2nd May, 2026.

  • The 10 minute maximum duration is important, so, if you’re unsure of how long your play runs, the easiest way to gauge it is to do a live reading. This is always a useful exercise as it can also bring to light any issues with dialogue or plot. A rough guide is 7 or 8 pages of double-spaced dialogue.

Plays must be submitted by Monday 2nd March 2026 and should be sent as a Word document or PDF to: theatre@corkartstheatre.com with the subject line Views from a Deckchair Submission 2026. Please do not submit plays to any other Cork Arts Theatre email address.

Note: We can only accept one play from each author.

Please note too that 'Views from a Deckchair' is a fund-raising event for the Cork Arts Theatre and, as such, we are not in a position to pay royalties should your play be chosen for performance.

If you have any other questions please email: theatre@corkartstheatre.com

We look forward to receiving your entries!

Sean Keane in concert at Kilworth Village Arts Centre Jan 10th

Village Arts Centre Kilworth, Cork
Saturday, Jan 10 from 8 pm to 10 pm

The "distinctive voice of Ireland" comes to Kilworth for a New Year's concert not to be missed.

Sean Keane, one of the country's foremost and popular performers, has confirmed a New Year date at the Village Arts Centre, Kilworth for Saturday, January 10th, 2026.

From Cahertrislane in Co Galway, Sean Keane is best known for his distinctive sean-nos style of singing. He is also an accomplished uileann piper and is equally proficient on flute and harmonica. Traditional Irish, folk and even country and blues songs all lend themselves to his unique style and unforgettable voice.

All of his solo albums are platinum sellers and remain in constant demand. Six solo albums later, Seán Keane continues to delight audiences all over the world with his live performances and recorded work. He tours regularly with his band in Ireland, Austria, Germany, the US and Canada as well as appearing at major festivals world-wide.

"I have been performing in Kilworth now for many years, and I always look forward to my visit to that part of County Cork," Sean commented, looking ahead to this upcoming concert that kicks off the VAC's 2026 programme of events.

Sean loves to meet with his fans and will make himself available after the concert for a chat or a photograph on the night. We can expect to hear many of his favourite songs, numbers like 'Isle of Hope', 'Galway to Gracelands', 'Fields of Gold' and 'Never Alone' among his many other hits.

The Village Arts Centre looks forward to welcoming one of Ireland's most popular and sought-after singers to launch its 2026 programme.

January at Triskel Arts Centre

Hi Cork Cultural Companions

Welcome to 2026! We’re so excited to bring you another year of exceptional international and Irish arthouse cinema, visual arts exhibitions and collaborations, and live music showcases. With a double bill of two featured cinema seasons, the start of our Spring String Quartet Series, and the first visual arts residency of the year, we are back with a bang this January!

Triskel Cinema returns on Friday 9 January with a second David Lynch season to mark the anniversary of his passing. David Lynch films have a dreamlike quality with an air of mystery or menace, all the while maintaining a wonderfully off-the-wall sense of humour. Since January 2026 would have marked his 80th birthday, Triskel Arts Centre will screen four of his finest feature length films, including TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME and MULHOLLAND DRIVE, to celebrate his legacy.

The end of this David Lynch season will coincide with our upcoming Ben Wheatley season, starting Sunday 25 January. We are delighted that Ben will be in attendance to present his latest film BULK, and we will also be screening his earlier films KILL LISTA FIELD IN ENGLAND and HIGH-RISE.

Triskel Sample Project Space welcomes Síomha Callanan. Starting Friday 9 January, her exhibitions will explore in depth the island on which Cork City centre stands, creating a new body of work based entirely on this specific part of the city. Her aim is to walk every street on the island and take photographs of what she encounters.

The Calathea Quartet is a dynamic ensemble comprising musicians from New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, and England. With a keen interest in championing the works of underrepresented composers, they play a wide variety of repertoire from the stalwarts of the classical canon to contemporary compositions, with a particular focus on the works of composers of marginalised genders. This award-winning quartet will be performing works by Haydn, Marian Ingoldsby and Benjamin Britten in a spellbinding matinee on Saturday 17 January.

Dr Matthew Whyte returns with another season of his Art History Reframed series. That starts on Tuesday 20 January and you can get a 20% discount on the series now.

There are more events to come over the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned!

See you soon,

Gillian and the team at Triskel
