Exciting news for heritage enthusiasts and the local community: the Youghal Lace Museum has opened its doors, offering a captivating journey into the rich history of one of Ireland’s most exquisite needle lace traditions.
Located in the heart of Youghal, the museum celebrates the town’s renowned lace-making heritage, which dates back to 1845. Youghal lace, also known as Point d'Irlande, was developed by the Presentation Sisters, who meticulously studied Italian needle lace techniques and imparted this intricate craft to local women. The lace gained international acclaim for its fine craftsmanship and elaborate floral motifs, with notable pieces including a train made for Queen Mary and a shawl gifted to Princess Alexandra.
As the museum begins to welcome visitors, it is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join its team. This is a nice opportunity to engage with cultural heritage, assist in preserving traditional crafts, and contribute to the museum's mission of education and community involvement.
For more information on visiting hours, exhibits, and volunteer applications, please visit the Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Development.
Come and be a part of preserving and celebrating the delicate threads that weave together Youghal's rich cultural tapestry.
