SpaceFest, our annual STEAM festival, expanded this year from East Cork into Cork City, offering a dynamic blend of science, art, and community engagement to new audiences. Highlights included the Space Cocktails Speakeasy at Cork County Cricket Club, where attendees explored the tastes of the universe through celestial-inspired drinks. At Blackrock Castle Observatory, Stitching Stars brought together educators, community volunteers, and adults with learning disabilities to create cosmic textile art. Champagne Supernova explored the science of supernovas and the story of EIRSAT-1, Ireland’s first satellite, followed by a workshop where participants designed galactic art books inspired by these cosmic phenomena.
The festival concluded with Cosmic Debris, an immersive multimedia experience that challenged audiences to reflect on humanity’s place in the universe and our environmental footprint. Artists-in-residence Nicholas Carn, Kerry Guinan, and Luisa Charles showcased kinetic sculptures and moving images addressing space debris, displayed under the National Space Centre’s iconic 32-metre Big Dish. |
