Please let us know you are coming Tel.: 021-4500688 or 085 867 0744 or email culture@muintircork.com

20 August, 11am - 1pm

  • The Maldron Hotel, Shandon, Cork City
  • John Redmond Street, Shandon, Cork City
  • Co. Cork City

The event will consist of the showing of a documentary "Mother Jones and Her Children", produced by Frameworks Films and the Cork Mother Jones Committee. This will examine the birth of Mary Harris here in Cork in 1837, her baptism in the North Cathedral nearby.

It will provide a snapshot of her subsequent emigration with her family to Canada where she became a teacher and a seamstress. We will examine how she lost her family of four young children and her husband to a yellow fever epidemic in 1867.

Using interviews with experts in Ireland and in the USA we will document her survival and her progress as a tough union organiser for the United Mineworkers of America.

Her miners loved her and she became known as " the most dangerous woman in America". Her slogan of "Pray for the Dead and Fight like Hell for the Living" is used regularly today, most recently invoked by President Michael D Higgins during the Covid 19 epidemic in relation to the front line workers.

This event is held at the Maldron Hotel Shandon, which is located in the heart of the Shandon Historic Quarter which itself is in the very heart of Cork City.

The venue is about 5 minutes walk from Christy Ring bridge and the Cork Opera House.
