Cobh Carillon Playing for Heritage Week Cobh

Cultural Companions will meet on Monday 19th August to enjoy this unique experience.

The carillon is located in the magnificent St Colman’s Cathedral overlooking Cobh town and Cork Harbour. The 49-bell Carillon of St Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh is the only such instrument in this country and is the largest in Ireland and Britain. It also includes Ireland’s largest bell, named St Colman (3.6 tons).

The carillon is played from a console within the belfry, consisting of a keyboard and a pedalboard. The action is completely mechanical and there is no artificial assist. Not unlike an organ console, the carillon keyboard consists of round wooden batons corresponding to the black and white keys while the pedals are shorter than those in an organ. Carillon bells are cast bronze and very precisely tuned. They do not swing or move in any way. The bell clappers, which are connected by direct mechanical linkage to the console, move to strike the bells. It is a percussion instrument which is completely touch responsive to give the carillonneur full capability for every musical expression from a gentle whisper to a thundering fortissimo.

Members will meet from 12pm in Cobh Heritage Centre café for coffee.

Optional entrance to Heritage Centre Queenstown exhibition price 12-15 euro
