Local Studies Podcast: Lughnasa and the other Quarter Days

Local Studies Podcast

Our latest podcast is all about the ancient season of Lughnasa and its traditional opening day, the first Sunday of August. The Quarter Days for the other three seasons, St. Brigid’s, Bealtaine and Halloween can be likewise accessed through the link to all podcasts below.

The days mark the start of each season under old weather patterns. Lughnasa is popular for being the only holiday time festival, often with accompanying sunshine, and associations with the Croagh Patrick pilgrimage, marriage customs and other rich traditions ensured its survival through the centuries.

The film adaptation of the Brian Friel drama “Dancing at Lughnasa”, with a spectacular bonfire scene, provided continuing vitality as a revival of the original play draws crowds to Dublin’s Gate Theatre.

Schull_Family Photo

This photo from the 1920s depicts then bank manager John Ashton Sheppard with his family, in the garden of their house adjacent to what is now Schull Library.

Built circa 1900, the premises once housed a Provincial Bank. While retaining its historical charm, the building is now home to a modern and vibrant library service which caters to the local community of Scull and outlying areas.

From printing and photocopying facilities to national and local newspapers available daily and of course a wide selection of books for all ages, Schull Library packs a lot into its modest frame.

Schull - Kids Area

Weekly meetings of the LEGO Club and Chess Club are supplemented by standalone events such as author visits, and recently the library has played host to several art exhibitions.

The all-ages Chess Club meets on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm - 4pm, and the LEGO Club on Saturday mornings from 10am - 1pm. Schull Library also facilitates a monthly Adult Book Club.

Schull_Adults Area

Currently on display in the library is a selection of animated shorts created by pupils of Schull Community College, on the theme Caring for Our Environment. Thanks to Schull Tidy Towns for organising this exhibition!

Schull_book display

A vestige of its former incarnation as a bank, two secure vaults still exist within the walls of the library building, while one has been repurposed as a storeroom, to this day the contents of the other vault remain a mystery…

FLOW: Art in Motion

FLOW: Art in Motion Exhibition at Skibbereen Library

Created by Skibbereen artist Nicola McCarthy and will be on display until Saturday August 31st

Nicola offers a colourful invitation into her world of creativity, exploring worlds within and without. In Nature, Nicola creates ephemeral art works such as the Mandala or Spiral, capturing their essence through photos, she uses watercolour to capture the ever rippling beauty of the sea and coast, slipping into Flow with the environment and carrying that spirit onto canvas, going deeper, allowing the current of creativity from within to run freely.

Nature inspires a loose and wild approach in the paintings, embracing the ebb and flow of the inner psyche. Marks made and buried, new layers added and pulled back, lingering expressions of energy in motion.
