Light and Shade Until 14 April
Taking its name from Soirle MacCana’ s Light and Shade, Youghal, the exhibition features 26 works from the gallery’s extensive collection. This selection is evocative of Spring, as a season of renewal, herds brought to pasture, new growth in gardens and hopefully good drying weather. The exhibition is an invitation to discover some lesser-known works and artists in our collection and to enjoy the grand stretch in the evening. CLARE LANGAN: The Heart of a Tree Screening until 28 April
This film contemplates the centrality of trees – the giants of nature – to the planet’s survival, and ours. Set in a barren treeless landscape, The Heart of a Tree (2020) is a glimpse into a future world where humans negotiate their way through an inhospitable environment, harvesting air – the new gold – and planting trees on a deserted black beach, hoping to repopulate the planet with its source of oxygen. Langan’s film explores the disconnection between humankind and nature and ultimately within us. Night Class is the result of Jan McCullough’s research into the history of Crawford Art Gallery. This exhibition of photographs and site-specific sculpture is presented at a pivotal time before the building undergoes a period of extensive renovation. McCullough’s new body of work responds to how acts of labour and the people who perform it are intertwined with the building’s fabric. To read more, visit here. | | Image courtesy of the artists
CURTIN // KEATING: Sit Stand Smoke 26 April – 5 May
Sit Stand Smoke is a brief adventure in virtual reality (VR) which unfolds in twists and turns, with art historian Éimear O’Connor giving insights to the characters that appear in Seán Keating’s painting, Men of the South (1921-22). Eventually, Keating himself shows up with his own view on proceedings. Often considered a traditionalist, the artist seems unexpectedly curious about the new technology on display. Funny, surprising, and presenting more than the occasional contradiction – one might be reminded of Seán Keating’s own personality, and of his passions and obsessions. Light and Shade Go dtí 14 Aibreán
Tá 26 saothar ó bhailiúchán fairsing an ghailearaí san áireamh sa taispeántas seo a ainmnítear i ndiaidh an tsaothair Light and Shade, Youghal le Soirle MacCana. Tá téama an earraigh le brath ar an taispeántas: séasúrna hathnuachana, tréada ar féarach, fás nua sna gairdíní agus, le cúnamh Dé,t riomach breá. Is deis iontach an taispeántas seo eolas a chur ar chuid de na saothair agus de na healaíontóirí inár mbailiúchán nach bhfuil an oiread sin clú orthu agus ar ndóigh taitneamh a bhaint as an síneadh breá tráthnóna. CLARE LANGAN: The Heart of a Tree Ar scáileán go dtí 28 Aibreán
Lón machnaimh atá sa scannán seo ar ról lárnach na gcrann – fathaigh an dúlra – i saol na cruinne, agus inár saol féin. Lonnaithear thírdhreach lom gan chrainn, léirítear i The Heart of A Tree (2020) domhan na todhchaí ina ndéanann daoine iarracht maireachtáil i dtimpeallacht sceirdiúil, ag cruinniú aeir – an t-ór nua – agus ag cur crann ar thrá fholamh dhubh, ag súil gur féidir an domhan a athdhaonrú leis an bhfoinse ocsaigineseo. Léiríteari scannán Langan domhan na todhchaí inar éabhlóidigh agus inar oiriúnaigh daoine daonna le go mairfidís, agus breathnaítear ar an dícheangal idir anduine daonna agus an nádúr. Tá an taispeántas seo de ghrianghraif agus an dealbh suíomhoiriúnaithe curtha i láthair le linn ré ríthábhachtach sula ndéanfar athchóiriú fairsing ar an bhfoirgneamh. Tugann saothar nua ealaíne McCullough freagra ar an mbealach a oibríonn an saothar agus na daoinea ghníomhaíonn é atá fite fuaite i ndlúth agus inneach an fhoirgnimh. CURTIN // KEATING: Sit Stand Smoke 26 Aibreán – 5 Bealtaine
Is mion-eachtraíocht é Sit Stand Smoke i réaltacht fhíorúil a thiteann amach le neart cora agus castaí, leis an staraí ealaíne Éimear O’Connor a thugann léargais ar na carachtair atá léirithe in ealaíon Sheán Keating, Men of the South (1921-22). Ar deireadh thiar thall, léiríonn Keatinga chuid léargais féin ar imeachtaí. Is minic ar tugadh traidisiúnaí air, bíonn an t-ealaíontóir fiosrach gan choinne faoin teicneolaíocht nua atá artaispeáint. Tá sé greannmhar, iontach, agus cuireann sé frithrá i láthair gominic - chuirfeá i gcuimhne do phearsantacht féin Sheán Keating, agus dáphaisin agus dá dhúspéiseanna.
