St. Brigid - Resources at Local Studies LibraryConsistent veneration of St. Brigid over the centuries reached new heights last year with the elevation of her feast day, February 1st, to a public holiday at the centre of a week-long festival. For the enhanced interest generated as that holiday comes around again, with the added attraction that Brigid’s death in 524 makes this year her 1,500th anniversary, the Local Studies Library has extensive useful resources on St. Brigid. Two of our podcasts, accessible at www.corklocalstudies.ie, focus on one of Ireland’s principal saints whose feast day is observed as if it was a church holiday. “St. Brigid” explores her fascinating life, from her time as a carer of the poor and a miracle worker while abbess in Kildare to the cloak, the cross making, and other traditions associated with her. “St. Brigid – New Perspectives” expands into verse and poetry about the saint herself, a remarkable Glastonbury connection and localities, rivers and wells throughout County Cork with names derived from hers. More information on Brigid and other saints in books, articles and other materials may be consulted at the Local Studies Library, Carrigrohane Road, Cork.
