Connecting with Men

Date: December 13th 2023
Time: 10am- 4.30pm
Venue: Gilbert Centre, Fair Street, Mallow, Co Cork

Aim of the Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to assist a broad range of practitioners and service providers to explore the world of males, and to develop practical strategies for effectively engaging with them around health and wellbeing issues.

The aim of this workshop is to assist a broad range of practitioners to effectively connect with men on health and wellbeing issues. It focuses on the engagement process (i.e. WHY and HOW to build relationships with men) rather than offering a new or revised health programme (i.e. WHAT to offer them).

Objectives of Workshop

The key objectives for this workshop are to:

  • Reflect upon how to create a ‘safe space’ for working with men.
  • Gain a common understanding of what men’s health is and why it is important.
  • Explore how gender influences the values and attitudes that men develop in relation to their health, and how this influences their health behaviours.
  • Identify some of the determinants that shape health outcomes for men.
  • Reflect on participants’ own value base, experience, skills, attitudes towards and expectations of men.
  • Explore what a ‘male friendly’ health programme or service looks like in practice.
  • Signpost participants to further sources of help, advice, guidance and support.

Who Should Attend?

This Workshop will be of interest to a broad range of service providers and practitioners who wish to connect in more meaningful ways with men.

Cost

The ‘Connecting with Men’ workshop is FREE for all participants.

Making Europe Personal - A bigger EU or a closer EU?

Get your voice, your ideas and recommendations on the enlargement of the European Union heard at this unique participative event!

Join us for a thought-provoking event on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 14:00 AM GMT, at the Lee Maltings Complex Dyke Parade, T12 R5CP Cork. This event aims to delve into the question of whether the European Union should focus on expanding its membership or strengthening its existing bonds.

Through engaging discussions and participative sessions, we will explore the potential benefits and challenges of both approaches. Experts on either side of the argument will share their insights, enabling attendees to gain a deeper understanding of the topic.

Participants will have the opportunity to exchange, develop their arguments, and recommendations based on the afternoon's discussions. Whether you're an EU enthusiast or simply curious about European integration, this event offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and broaden your perspective. Citizens' recommendations will be put forward to policy-makers- Ministers, TDs and Members of the European Parliament in the run up to the European elections in June 2024.

Don't miss out on this exciting event! Mark your calendars and get ready for an afternoon of stimulating conversations and new connections.

November at Triskel Arts Centre

Hi Cork Cultural Companions

Welcome to the Triskel Newsletter for November. Before we get to CIFF though, we have the third Spotlight Chamber Music Series concert - this one is with Trio Táin and two great films: the best concert movie ever made and the first film Robert de Niro and Martin Scorsese worked on together.

At the end of November, join us for the Piatti Quartet and NOTIFY who are coming back and this time they’re bringing siblings Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta.

And in December news: our Christmas Movies are now on sale! The Muppets, Kevin McCalister, John McClane and George Bailey are bringing all the holiday feels back to Triskel so get your tickets now.

Education

Truth be Told

A Creative Agency project that explores messaging, media and visual storytelling

This Autumn, the Glucksman invites teenage asylum seekers, refugees and migrants to work with artist Seiko Hayase on a series of creative workshops that explore the art of détournement. Taking inspiration from current exhibition détour: Selected works from the FRAC Bretagne collection, participants will learn creative skills under the guidance of artist, curators and facilitators.

Détournement is the art of mixing, sampling or editing advertisements or images from mainstream media to subvert or 'détourn' the meaning behind the original image in an effort to highlight a social injustice. The teenagers aged 13-17 years will develop their ideas and skills over 4 days of workshops as they work to create original art for public presentation. The
Creative Agency project is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.

Better Together

Art workshops with the Down Syndrome Centre Cork

Young people with Down Syndrome and their families have been visiting the Glucksman this October, coinciding with Down Syndrome Awareness month, to take part in facilitated hands-on creative workshops that explore the idea of togetherness.

Taking the theme of family as the inspiration for the art activities, children and their parents have worked on large scale drawings, prints and paintings. Under the guidance of facilitator Meadhbh Healy, participants have had the opportunity to learn new skills and to make great art in a fun and relaxing environment. We look forward to celebrating the young artists at the end of the year when we host an exhibition of their created artworks in the gallery.
