Cork Cultural Companions is an Age & Opportunity Arts initiative, delivered by Muintir Cork and supported by the HSE and Cork City and County Councils. Cork Cultural Companions has local networks of members who attend events together regularly in Cork City, Mallow, Bantry and East Cork.

Cork International Film Festival 9-26 November 2023

 

From surrealist gastronomic adventures to exquisite French cuisine to elevating the humble pizza, feast your eyes on our Culinary Cinema strand this November. See below for details of our special film and food event packages, and our new Culinary and Film Heritage Walking Tour.

CULINARY CINEMA

The Taste of Things (aka The Pot-au-Feu) by Tran Anh Hung:
A Belle Époque feast for all the senses. Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel serve up gastronomic marvels with a moving tale of love. (3pm, Sun 19th Nov, The Everyman)

A Chef for Dalí  (Esperando a Dalí) 
by David Pujol:
In 1970s Spain, a talented chef, Fernando arrives at 'The Surreal' beach bar, Cadaqués, home to artist Salvador Dalí - and their paths cross to create a new culinary genius. Deliciously fun! (5pm, Fri 10th Nov, The Everyman)
Followed by: a local, seasonal, after hours pop-up supper at The Farmgate Café, English Market.

Stella by Tyler Doehring:
Mouthwatering and joyful. Can a humble Neapolitan pizzeria achieve the first Michelin Star whilst retaining its vital role as the soul of its community? (6pm, Tue 14th Nov, Triskel)
Followed by: Volcano Pizza, Neapolitan sweet treats and refreshments pop-up event at NeighbourFood and Apple Market.

Walking Tour: Culinary and Film Heritage with Regina Sexton:
Join UCC's food and culinary historian, Regina Sexton, for a culinary walking tour of Cork City. The tour will highlight the importance of food in shaping the city's social, economic and cultural profile through time. (12pm, Sun 19th Nov, meeting point at The English Market, Grand Parade)

Virgilio by Alred Oliveri:
Peruvian superstar chef Virgilio Martinez embarks on an expedition through his native Peru to investigate the origins of its ingredients and re-evaluate his life, his restaurant, and the sustainability of food production post pandemic. (6pm, Wed 15th Nov, Triskel).

A post-screening panel discussion will be facilitated by food writer and journalist Joe McNamee, with Cork Michelin Star chef Takashi Miyazaki; Virginia O'Gara, co-founder of My Goodness; and Dr. Barbara Doyle Prestwich, Head of Plant Science, UCC

A daughter documents her father's deeply personal communion with the stunningly beautiful and mountainous terrain he grew up in. (3.15pm, Thu 23rd Nov, Triskel.

Mighty Afrin: In the Time of Floods by Angelos Rallis:
Twelve-year-old Afrin flees from her flooded river home to the overpopulated city of Dhaka, alone on a small boat, in this immersive enviromental documentary. (2.30pm, Tue 14th Nov, The Everyman)
