Katty Barry, Queen of the Coal Quay returns by popular demand. Having sold out during its previous run at the Cork Arts Theatre, the play, written and directed by Marion Wyatt, creator of Before DawnDockersShawliesOn Albert Road and The Sunbeam Girls promises an equally entertaining show all about “a bold and beautiful Cork woman.” The play, written with the support of Miss Barry’s family, chronicles the colourful life of one of the great Coal Quay characters. An all Cork cast and creative team bring this powerful woman back to life.

Katty Barry, who was a legend in her own time, ran an eating house in Dalton’s Avenue, just off Cornmarket Street. Peers and paupers frequented her establishment alike, and all were treated the same, with nightly songs and stories, as Katty served alcohol, often late at night, despite having no licence, and being repeatedly fined. Katty presided over bohemian Cork life until the closure of her establishment in the late sixties.

What audience members said about the 2021 production:

“ …this play is every bit as good as Angela’s Ashes and Philomena.”

“It was superb…..a fantastic cast, an amazing writer & director.”

“The story, the acting, the production …the whole thing was brilliant!”

“Marie O’Donovan brilliantly captures Katty’s complexity, resourcefulness and heart.”
