Cork County Council/ Centre Culturel Irlandais Residency  2023/24

Julia Pallone

Julia Pallone, the recipient of the 2023 Cork County Council / Centre Culturel Irlandais Residency

Kinsale based artist Julia Pallone has been selected as the recipient of the Cork County Council / Centre Culturel Irlandais Residency

As part of her residency Julia plans to study animal representation in medieval works of art housed at the nearby Musée de Cluny.  She has a particular interest in how, in the medieval period, real and imaginary animals are often represented together, and she plans to create a series of original drawings and porcelain sculptures from  this investigation.

She says “the co-existence between unicorn, dragons and familiar pets shows an interest for the marvellous and fabulous; it’s a co-existence that intrigues me. My interest lies in the possible occurrences of metamorphosis and transformation. I like to explore the fantastic in everyday life, not as an intrusion into the real world, but as an inherent part of it.”

Cork County Council gratefully acknowledges the support of the Centre Culturel Irlandais for this annual residency award.

Cork Young Filmmakers is offering a series of hands-on filmmaking workshops this summer across County Cork for young people from 14 to 18 years old. Each workshop will cover scriptwriting, camera work, lighting, directing actors, and an introduction to editing. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have experience with every role on the team and together will have produced a short film as a film crew.

Each five-day workshop week will run from 10 am – 4:30 pm On the following dates:

  • Midleton June 26-30
  • Mallow July 3-7
  • Cobh July 10-14

Workshops are sponsored by Cork County Council, The Arts Council, SECAD, Cork ETB and Creative Ireland, and the total cost is just €75 per person for the full week.

These courses are specifically designed for young people and are ideal for those who are creative and have a genuine interest in filmmaking, either in front of or behind the camera. Previous experience is not a requirement and each workshop creates a safe place for young people to meet and learn with other filmmakers. It’s all about having fun, building confidence, encouraging creativity, and self-expression.

Taught by experienced professional filmmakers, each week covers storytelling, directing, film production, script development, sound, lighting, cinematography and editing. Each day from 10am to 4.30pm is jam-packed with practical activities which encourage participants to explore a wide range of filmmaking skills from writing and directing and acting, to cinematography, editing, and creating soundtracks.
