International Women's Day
Cork County Council Library Service has a series of events on offer to mark this year’s International Women’s Day which takes place on Wednesday March 8th 2023. Libraries throughout the county will be organising book and information displays, as well as some special events aimed at celebrating and supporting women. Several libraries will present IWD story-time sessions for primary schools and mark the day with their book clubs, knitting circles and creative writing groups. This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, which means we should strive to give people the tools and supports needed to achieve equality. Libraries do this in a range of ways by removing barriers to library use, such as making membership free of charge and running programmes and services which can enhance people’s ability to avail of library services such as introducing assistive technologies like the new C-Pen initiative. Cork County Council Library Service is also #EmbracingEquity by providing free period products in all branches across the county.

Cracking the Code at Mallow Library
To celebrate International Women's Day 2023 on Wednesday March 8th, Mallow Library invites women to visit the branch to celebrate this year’s theme – Cracking the Code: Innovation for a Gender-Equal Future. This theme emphasizes the importance of bold, transformative ideas, inclusive technologies, and accessible education in combating discrimination and the marginalization of women globally. Technology is a field that is often thought of as male-dominated, and though men do seem to be the face of modern technology, women have been innovating, inventing, and leading the way to new advancements for just as long as men have. In fact, most of the first computer programmers were women, including Ada Lovelace, who invented the science of computer programming between 1842 and 1843. In an effort to show why women can and should succeed in computer science, Mallow Library is promoting technology and how it can have a positive effect on women by giving small presents, which illustrate how technology has assisted women’s lives (while stocks last) to women dressed in purple who visit the library on Wednesday March 8th.
