From the Well Short Story Competition 2025 Open for Submissions

 

From the Well Short Story Competition 2025

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service is accepting submissions to the ‘From the Well’ Short Story competition 2025.

The competition invites entrants to submit a short story of no longer than 2000 words. Twenty stories will be selected for inclusion in the 2025 edition of the short story anthology. Selection will be based on the quality of writing, structure, and suitability to the anthology.

The winning story and two others will feature in the 2025 West Cork Literary Festival as part of the anthology launch event in Bantry Library. The winning writer will be offered a place on a short story workshop at West Cork Literary Festival with tutor Ross Raisin, between the 16th and 18th of July, and will receive a €250 contribution towards accommodation.

The deadline for online submissions is Friday February 28th at 5pm.

Hi Cork Cultural Companions   Welcome to the Triskel Newsletter for February. After a (relatively!) quiet start to the year, we are back in full swing in February with lots for you to enjoy across visual arts, live music and cinema   Sample-Studios in partnership with Cork City Council are offering a monthly guided tour of Island City – Cork’s Urban Sculpture Trail. The first walk of the new year is on Thursday 13 February. The walks will begin and end at Triskel, they’re free and booking is essential.   Áine Andrews returns with her popular series on Famous Paintings and their Hidden Histories on Tuesday 4 February. First up for discussion is La Loge by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.   Tetiana Milshyna will finish her residency in Triskel Sample Project Space on Tuesday 4 February with Viktoria Kondratieva starting hers on Friday 7 February.   Music this month features classical (Sonoro Quartet), traditional Irish (Derek Hickey, Liz & Yvonne Kane, and Macdara Ó Faoláin) and singer-songwriter (Dave Hause).   There’s so much to see in Triskel Cinema this month. We’re especially looking forward to the season of fascinating films from Chantal Akerman, including the one which was named as the greatest film of all time in Sight and Sound’s critic’s poll in 2022.   For Valentine’s this year, we will have our traditional screening of Casablanca with the addition this year of another classic, When Harry Met Sally… Incidentally, Harry and Sally actually watch and discuss Casablanca!   Literature fans will love the documentary about Edna O’Brien. Blue Road is showing Sun 16 – Wed 19 Feb.   Keep scrolling for all that’s happening this month at Triskel and also save the dates for our season of David Lynch – happening 16, 18 and 19 March. Join artist Amal Hope for a new series of Sunday morning classes that promote wellbeing through creativity. The classes will provide a variety of art based activities in a calm, positive environment. No previous art experience required.

Each stand-alone class runs for 90 minutes and all materials are provided. Booking is essential.

A painting course for older people

The Glucksman team invites you to take part in their popular six-week course which this season will cover all the basics of acrylic painting.

Get the new year off to a creative start with our Brush Up! art classes. Artist Stephen Doyle will guide participants through all the basics of acrylic painting including underpainting, colour mixing, composition, texture and value. Each class will explore a different technique to help you master this quick drying medium.

6 classes. €15 per class.
