Hi Cork Cultural Companions
Welcome to the Triskel Cinema Newsletter.
This week at Triskel Cinema, we screen Bugonia, the latest gripping oddity from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos and his frequent creative collaborator Emma Stone.
Bugonia tells the story of icy tech CEO Michelle (a reliably incredible Stone) who is kidnapped by Teddy, a conspiracy-minded beekeeper (played by the fantastic Jesse Plemons). The reason behind the abduction? Teddy suspects that Michelle is not simply a craven capitalist; he believes that she is, in fact, an alien from the planet Andromeda, sent to Earth to destroy humankind (and the bees). A riveting and twisty exploration of paranoia and humanity’s worthiness, Bugonia is by turns thrillingly tense and darkly funny.
We also screen the mesmerizing modern fairy-tale The Ice Tower. Set in the 1970s, The Ice Tower follows runaway Jeanne, who takes refuge in a film studio where an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is being shot. Jeanne soon becomes captivated by Cristina, the mysterious and alluring star of the film - and a mutual but dangerous obsession begins to develop between the pair. Stunningly shot, this wintry tale is ‘a mesmeric melodrama, mixing sensuality with a teetering anxiety, with two outstanding performances' (The Guardian ★★★★★).
This Thursday, join us for this year’s edition of European Cinema Night, a joint initiative organised by Europa Cinemas and Creative Europe MEDIA. We screen 2017’s sublime Academy-Award winning drama A Fantastic Woman - a story of loss, love, trans identity and resilience. This event will kick off with a wine reception at 6.30pm, followed by A Fantastic Woman at 7pm (with an introduction by Irish Times film critic Tara Brady).
On Saturday 6 December, we have two special screenings. If you’re looking for something a little more blood-soaked and terrifying for your festive viewing, we screen the excellent and hugely influential sorority-set slasher classic Black Christmas at 5pm, alongside short film The Occupant of the Room.
Later that night at 7.30pm, you can catch Dogma: Resurrected!, Kevin Smith’s hugely fun religious satire, which features Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as fallen angels trying to scam their way back into heaven (at the expense of the human race) and a glorious Alan Rickman as a messenger of God.
Next week, we screen Lynne Ramsey’s riveting Die My Love, starring an astonishing Jennifer Lawrence as a woman unravelling amidst a new life in Montana with her partner (Robert Pattinson). We also screen Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, a wonderful drama following an 7-year-old girl and her dysfunctional family in the final days of white minority rule in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia).
On Thursday 11 December, our pals at East Asia Film Festival return with the lovely Chinese coming-of-age feature The Botanist at 6pm, and we screen the electrifying Hong Kong action flick City on Fire at 8.15pm.
And then… it’s Christmas Movies season at Triskel Cinema!
See you soon,
Gillian and the team at Triskel
