Triskel Visual Arts News

Hi Cork Cultural Companions

Welcome to the Triskel Visual Arts Newsletter. The roadworks on South Main Street are challenging everyone at the moment but hopefully you can take a moment to enjoy some Winter Sun courtesy of Elinor O’Donovan. This light projection on the facade of Triskel Christchurch takes as its inspiration the iconic view from the top of Patrick’s Hill at Bells Field. The video work is a looping film depicting Corkonians sharing a moment of togetherness, connected by their mutual appreciation for a setting summer sun.

Tomorrow morning, Viktoria Kondratieva will lead a workshop in Ukrainian Motanka dolls. Join her for this free workshop.

There are just two paintings left for Áine Andrews to cover in her spring series - get your tickets online now. From Tuesday 18 March, Dr Matthew Whyte will be back with his Art History Reframed series - still time to get the 20% series discount for that!

MTU Crawford College of Art and Design are bringing together eleven artists and writers for a one-day symposium to explore the artistic, historical, theoretical and societal contexts and debates that underlie painting’s ‘Crisis/death/resurrection’ in all its various guises. Get your tickets now.

See you soon

The Art of Ukrainian Motanka Workshop with Viktoria Kondratieva

Sat 1 Mar, 11am - 12pm

Tickets: Free, but booking is necessary

Join artist Viktoria Kondratieva for a hands-on workshop exploring the ancient Ukrainian tradition of Motanka dolls – sacred family talismans symbolising prosperity, goodness, and hope. Dating back over 5,000 years, these hand-knotted dolls represent the unity of generations and the deep cultural heritage of Ukraine. During Soviet times, the tradition of making Motanka dolls was somewhat lost, but in recent years they have made a powerful comeback. Today, many households in Ukraine and beyond cherish Motanka dolls as traditional oberihs – protective charms that carry deep cultural and spiritual significance.

In this session, you’ll learn the history, meaning, and techniques of crafting your own Motanka, infusing it with your intentions and creativity.
