August is Cork Craft Month and we are proud to host a special showcase featuring Cork Craft & Design's members work from 6 - 31 August alongside some fantastic events that allow you to learn about contemporary craft making. As part of our Heritage Week celebrations. you can sign up for a creative exploration of University College Cork campus in two special art walks: Bridge to Bridge Tour & Creative Wanderings: Biodiversity & Art at UCC.
In the Behind the Scenes, we are looking at Women on Walls and this month's Little Interview features jewellery designer Rike Lenzing who will be giving a public masterclass at the Glucksman on 10 August.

As the Glucksman celebrates its 20th anniversary in October 2024, the selection of works in this exhibition invites you to consider the diversity of Irish art practice that exists in the UCC Art Collection from some of the earliest accessioned works to the most recent acquisitions.
The University College Cork art collection emerged out of an initiative in 1975 to secure some examples of modern Irish art for display in university buildings. The selection of works was guided by Dr. James White, Director of the National Gallery at the time. In 1985, UCC’s Governing Body formally established a Visual Arts Committee to provide greater access to the visual arts and the collection was developed in a more formal way.
The opening of a dedicated university art gallery in 2004 brought further curatorial focus to the ways in which visual art was acquired and presented on campus. In 2013, the Glucksman was the first art museum in Munster to achieve full accreditation on the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland which recognises the professional care of collections in Irish museums and galleries. Stories of Art is supported by The Arts Council Ireland, University College Cork and private philanthropy through Cork University Foundation. Now until 3 November 2024

This exhibition brings together artworks from the UCC Art Collection that focus on environmental observations and concerns, giving us an opportunity to reflect on the diverse ecologies that sustain our natural world. From in-depth explorations of our peatlands to skyward habitats and UCC’s own living arboretum, Groundwork presents the precious, sometimes precarious, but also hopeful vistas of our island home. Each of these artworks has a story to tell and with the support of our colleagues in Archaeology, the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Office of Sustainability and Climate Action, we have devised learning resources that encourage creative reflections on the challenges and possibilities of being responsive to climate change. Groundwork is supported by The Arts Council Ireland, University College Cork and private philanthropy through Cork University Foundation.

 | Up Cycling!
Up Cycling! continues across the city this summer! The Glucksman and Cork Midsummer Festival present new public artworks highlighting the importance of cycling by celebrated Irish Illustrator Chris Judge. We invite you to get on your bike and explore Up Cycling! an ambitious new trail of public artworks that runs across Cork city. The temporary artworks created for Cork Midsummer Festival showcase the importance and joy of cycling in urban spaces. Commissioned by The Glucksman and curated by Tadhg Crowley, the project is a collaboration between the artist and Cork Cycling Campaign that involved a public consultation which helped shape the design and message behind the artworks. Up Cycling! is a project delivered in partnership with Cork City Council. The artworks are on display at 6 sites across Cork City until the end of August.

 | Summer Art Club The Glucksman's highly anticipated Summer Art Clubs are back! Our creative clubs for young people continue throughout August. Led by experienced facilitators, children will undertake imaginative projects and create unique artworks when learning about painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage and drawing. Glucksman Art Clubs fuel children’s imaginations, develop their artistic skills and encourage their creativity. Each session is carefully designed to provide age-appropriate projects and are delivered in a friendly and positive environment.

 | Reverie: A mini showcase of Cork Craft & Design members
We are proud to be hosting a mini showcase of Cork Craft & Design’s members work from August 6th to 31st!
The showcase entitled “Reverie”, is a display of pieces that evoke a sense of dreamy contemplation, fantasy and deep thought. The work encourages viewers to pause, reflect and connect with the artists through their chosen medium.
Exhibiting artists and makers include: Alan Horgan, Ann Mechelinck, Anthony Aylward, Anastasia Stepnova, Charlie Mahon, Kathryn Smyth, Orla O’Regan, Hannah McGrenera, Monica Fergus, Emily Thompson, Suzanne O’Sullivan, Maura Whelan, Martha Cashman, Roser Perez and Molly Ellis.

 | Masterclass with Jewellery Designer Rike Lenzing This Cork Craft Month, the Glucksman invites you to take part in a unique masterclass with jewellery designer Rike Lenzing. Discover the processes involved in creating 3D paper jewellery with designer Rike Lenzing in this hands on masterclass as part of the Glucksman's series of events for Cork Craft Month.
A graduate of Crawford College of Art & Design, Rike Lenzing has worked as an artist, designer and maker for 40 years. Rike loves working with paper as it makes for a spontaneous, creative process. It is versatile and sustainable, feeling light and warm on the skin. Her pieces transform hand cut 2D paper strips into robust but weightless 3D paper structures, by using repetitive folding and braiding techniques.
This masterclass will take participants through the basics of jewellery design, introducing folding techniques, braiding styles and colour combinations. No experience necessary and all materials provided.

 | | Public Talk with Seán O'Sullivan of badly made books
To mark Cork Craft Month, the Glucksman has invited founder of badly made books Seán O'Sullivan to give a public talk in the museum.
On Saturday 24th August, designer Seán O'Sullivan will give a free public talk as part of the Glucksman's series of events to mark Cork Craft Month. O'Sullivan is founder of badly made books, a Cork based company that specialise in producing high quality / low impact recycled paper products. With badly made books O'Sullivan adheres to three principles - to use recycled papers, to make locally & to print with restraint. The company has an online shop and a workshop and studio in the heart of the city.

 | Creative Wanderings: Biodiversity & Art at UCC
Join us on a guided walk of UCC's biodiversity trail and the Glucksman's current exhibition Groundwork: Climate Awareness in the UCC Art Collection
The University College Cork campus is rich in biodiversity and participants will learn about some of the 451 flora and fauna that make this urban oasis their home. The new Biodiversity Trail provides an accessible space for those who are new to wildlife watching, as well as being enjoyable for seasoned naturalists. The guided walk will highlight how artists interpret and represent biodiversity, starting with a focus on key works within the Groundwork exhibition before heading out on the trail where participants will be given basic creative approaches and materials to allow them to respond to the University arboretum, wildflower meadow, and River Lee.
Creative Wanderings: Biodiversity & Art at UCC is a collaboration between UCC Sustainability and Climate Action Office, the Glucksman and Cork City Council.

Women on Walls: What's in a Portrait?
At the Glucksman we are proud to support and showcase Women on Walls - a campaign by Accenture Ireland that seeks to make women leaders visible through a series of commissioned portraits that will create a lasting cultural legacy for Ireland.
The public are asked to nominate women who meet the criteria, from which four subjects will be selected – submit your nomination here. The closing date is 12 noon on Tuesday 6 August 2024. This unique art commission will become part of the permanent UCC art collection.
Being a part of this opportunity has reminded us of some of the wonderful portraits which form part of the UCC Art Collection, and which have been a result of commissions from our Education and Community programme.
One such project which is very dear to us is A Story of Home, created in 2022, which saw artist Joe Caslin work with Cork Migrant Centre and families who are seeking asylum in Ireland to create new artworks.
Collaborative sessions encouraged the group to look at the power of portraiture to communicate ideas and reveal insights into the sitter. Together participants discussed posture, gesture, and symbolism, before putting all their learning into practice and sitting for a portrait with the artist. Two of these portraits were wrapped around prominent buildings in the city and county, speaking to the presence and absence of the migrant community in rural and urban Ireland.
