Triskel Newsletter for April

Hi Cork Cultural Companions

Welcome to the Triskel Newsletter for April.

This month at Triskel, we bring you another incredible 4 weeks of arthouse and international cinema. Starting off strong, we screen the award-winning drama The Zone of Interest, and are delighted to screen three films by the wonderful French director Celine Sciamma: coming-of-age classic Girlhood, stunning historical romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and magical mother-daughter fable Petite Maman.

You can also look forward to: a scathing and hilarious Romanian gig economy satire (Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World), a gripping Irish thriller/drama (Baltimore), and the return of two recent favourites (Miyazaki masterpiece The Boy and the Heron and captivating courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall).

Catch the gorgeous and tender new film from Hirokazu Kore-eda (Monster), a chilling Irish folk horror (All You Need Is Death), and a whimsical, utterly charming animated odd-couple story (Robot Dreams).

We finish out this month at Triskel Cinema with an epic and empathetic refugee drama (Il Capitano) and a wild and witty modern American odyssey (The Sweet East)

We welcome two film festivals to Triskel this month. The Japanese Film Festival screens anime Lonely Castle in the Mirror and composer documentary Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus on Thursday 11 April. The Baltic Film Festival is with us on Friday 19 April and Saturday 20 April, screening films from Estonia (period romance Living Images), Lithuania (war drama Kisses, Juozas) and Latvia (political drama Soviet Milk).

We have three fantastic live music concerts this month at Triskel.

A Fool’s Errand takes place on Saturday 6 April: this event, presented by Triskel Arts Centre and Unreal Cities, is a major new work for narrator, three musicians and painter, featuring the recordings of 49 voices; family, friends and colleagues of writer Dermot Healy in a celebration of his seminal epic poem, A Fool’s Errand.

(To celebrate Contemporary Irish Music, we have a special discount bundle! When you purchase tickets for A Fool’s Errand, Roamer and Stone Drawn Circles (the latter two acts play at Triskel in May), you will get 20% off! And you’ll support Irish musicians who are constantly pushing themselves to create new music.) and that’s not an April Fool’s joke!

The talented musician and multidisciplinary artist - and our RESONATE artist-in-residence - Vicky Langan is on the Triskel stage for a Music Network RESONATE performance on Saturday 13 April.

Live ‘n’ Gigging is back on Thursday 18 April - don’t miss this special end-of-year showcase from the students of Music, Management and Sound at Tramore Road Campus.

Cork World Book Fest (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year!) runs from Tuesday 23 to Sunday 28 April with events at Triskel taking place from Thursday 25 - Saturday 27. There is an eclectic mix of great literary events happening during the fest, including events with writers such as Booker Prize winner Paul Lynch, a Literature and Psychology event with Dr Tony Bates, Palestinian poet Marwan Makhoul and more.

Be sure to check out Tempus Futurum, the incredible light projection by artist Brian Kenny, part of Island City: Cork’s Urban Sculpture Trail. This ten minute moving image artwork can be viewed on the South Main Street façade of the Triskel building, every evening after dark, until Tuesday 30 April.

Riki Matsuda is also here until the end of April. Riki is the first artist to take up residence in Triskel Sample Project Space. This is a new partnership between Triskel and Sample-Studios that offers artists a focused and intensive working space where they can develop and test their burgeoning projects in a hybrid workspace/public space. Riki’s multidisciplinary practice centres around communication and how language serves and deserts us.

On Thursday 4 April, we are delighted to welcome ADHD Ireland to Triskel for a fascinating event on ADHD and the Arts. Three creatives working within the arts will discuss their own experience of ADHD and how it has influenced their artistic journeys. Featuring Louise Barry, Charles Neilson and Sean Downey in conversation with Mike McGrath Bryan (Irish Examiner). They are managing ticket sales via their own Eventbrite.
