Get to Know Fermoy LibraryFermoy library is set back just behind the main street on Connolly Street and supplies local and not-so-local people with access to a wide variety of books, audiobooks, sheet music, and DVDs, while playing host to a multitude of events and clubs throughout the year. We also have daily newspapers, two public PCs, and self-service printing and photocopying available for use. The branch is currently manned by Lynda, Majella, Angela, and Gemma, who endeavour to provide a welcoming environment to its users. | | Fermoy library is proud to be one of the few My Open Library branches as part of the My Open Library initiative, allowing us to extend our services to the public outside of our regular hours. It is an exceedingly popular service; enquiries about it are frequently taken at the desk and slots for inductions to MOL membership are in high demand. These inductions are held bi-weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4pm and must be booked in advance. This service allows the public (16yrs+) to use the library 7 days a week outside of staff hours, between 8am - 9.30am and 5.30pm - 10pm Tuesday to Saturday (excl. bank holidays), or between 8am and 10pm on unstaffed days. |
Our primary visitors to the library are the local schoolchildren alongside the knitting club, the embroidery circle, an Ciorcal Cainte, and the Lego club who make use of the privacy of our meeting room. Talks and exhibitions are also held occasionally for the benefit of the local community to entice people not only to interact with the library, but also with each other. Over the past year we had talks for children surrounding bees and comic creation, presentations from the SEAI and ALONE, the launch of the Repair Café, and exhibitions by local artists and musicians - to name but a few. Information for all our upcoming events can be found on posters in the library itself and on the Cork County Council Library & Arts Service social media. |

The first podcast examines the life of Patrick from childhood enslavement to missionary preaching with colourful detail, including the saint’s spectacular pyrotechnics on the Hill of Tara and the banishing of those dreaded snakes from our shores. There is also coverage of his enduring appeal through people, places and sporting clubs named after him. The second podcast concentrates on the St. Patrick’s Day parade which has evolved from its simple eighteenth century American origins to the diverse spectacles celebrated annually in villages, towns, and cities across the world. References to parade grand marshals in some Cork towns and participation by marching bands are of local interest. The podcasts can be accessed per www.corklocalstudies.ie, which contains several other local studies pieces including a timely podcast about Easter, which comes two weeks after Patrick’s Day this year called “Easter Customs and Legends”, covering both the origins of the Christian celebration and the attendant Easter eggs and hot crossed buns.
