DANNY MCCARTHY: Found Sound (Lost at Sea) 11.1.11

11January

A lost coastal sound will return to echo through Cork city centre for one day this January.
Found Sound (Lost at Sea) 11.1.11 is an installation by sound artist Danny McCarthy which, on Thursday 11 January 2024, will resonate across Emmet Place outside Crawford Art Gallery and infiltrate the surrounding soundscapes of Cork. The performance of this unique sound work commemorates the thirteenth anniversary of the last foghorn sounding from lighthouses along the Irish coast when they ceased on 11 January 2011. Found Sound (Lost at Sea) 11.1.11 was created as a result of McCarthy’s interest in acoustic ecology. The sound installation will be audible intermittently throughout the day and serves as a reminder of what was once an imperative soundtrack to daily life.

Dominic Thorpe: Dark Dark Mouth

15 – 28 January

Dark Dark Mouth is a body of performance, drawing, and installation work by Dominic Thorpe, which addresses perpetrator trauma and the Irish Civil War (1922-23) in Cork. Perpetrator trauma is an often under-explored aspect of conflict. It can be experienced by individuals and groups struggling to comprehend and process violence for which they have been directly or indirectly responsible. In Dark Dark Mouth, Thorpe takes various instances of Irish Civil War killings in Cork City as his starting point and gives expression to the perpetrator trauma that can mark and seep into individual, collective, and generational experiences in the aftermath of violence. Presented as part of the Building as Witness programme, Dark Dark Mouth is accompanied by a performance (25 January) and Perpetrator Trauma: A Discussion (27 January).
