RITA DUFFY: Persistent Illusion

Extended until 30 October

Don’t miss your last chance to see our exhibition RITA DUFFY: Persistent Illusion, which is extended due to popular demand until Sunday 30 October! For her first solo exhibition at Crawford Art Gallery, artist Rita Duffy presents a trilogy of new, large scale works that address urgent themes of planetary crisis and political chaos. Rita Duffy (b.1959) is one of the major contemporary artists to emerge from Northern Ireland. Encompassing themes and images of Irish identity, history, and politics, her work is often both personal and autobiographical. In her work, she also pays homage to the language of magic realism. CONSERVING HARRY CLARKE: Early Stained Glass

Until 26 November

Our Harry Clarke Room has reopened following the conservation of its stained-glass panels! The three panels displayed in this exhibition are the earliest known works in stained glass by Harry Clarke (1889-1931). Dating to a highpoint in the Celtic Revival period, they were made while the artist was in his early twenties and still a student at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. In 1911, Clarke was awarded a highly coveted gold medal for The Consecration of St Mel, Bishop of Longford, by St Patrick (1910), The Godhead Enthroned (1911), and The Meeting of St Brendan with the Unhappy Judas (1911). They were subsequently purchased by Crawford Art Gallery in 1924. Accompanying their redisplay is a short film by Marcella O’Connor which documents conservator Philip Crook’s recent repair and cleaning of these rare panels. Cork Culture Night 2023

We had a busy evening this Cork Culture Night as we welcomed a new record of over 4,300 visitors to the Gallery! We hope you enjoyed our range of exhibitions, creative activities, live music performances, screenings, talks, tours, and tasty treats from The Green Room at the Crawford. It was a great pleasure to share an evening of cultural delights with our visitors! A big thank you to all performers who made the night such a success!

Public feedback for the night includes:

‘I happened to be in Cork on Culture Night. I arrived early and wandered into Crawford Art Gallery. It was buzzing with creative energy - art workshops, musical performances and free art books in the wonderfully quaint gallery shop. Most importantly I could stare for hours at the Mary Swanzy on the stairs. An underestimated genius IMHO. Thank you to Mary McCarthy and your team for tending to this national treasure. I hope to be back with the family soon.’

‘Thank you Crawford for a brilliant night, especially the No Name Trio’

Friends Autumn Lectures 2023

John Hogan: Virtuoso al Pantheon with Dr Michael Waldron

Friday 13 October 2023,12:30pm

In autumn 1823, John Hogan (1800-1858) exhibited his sculptural work at the Royal Irish Institution, Dublin, just a few months before setting out on what would become a transformative 25-year sojourn in Rome. Join Dr Michael Waldron for this talk about the Tallow-born sculptor who would go on to be one of the celebrated Virtuosi al Pantheon.

Imago Pietatis: Michelangelo’s Pietà and the Art of Reform with Matthew Whyte

Friday 20 October 2023, 12:30pm

In Rome in 1499, Michelangelo completed the masterpiece that would ensure his lifelong fame. Known simply as the Pietà, the monumental marble shows the Virgin Mary cradling the dead Christ in her lap. The sculptor was just twenty-four years old, but had secured his position as the world’s most skilful carver. This talk will focus on the subject of the Pietà in Michelangelo’s art, questioning the conditions which defined his outlook on the subject and the sources which informed his renditions of the theme.

Crawford Art Gallery: Site of Change with Dr Tom Spalding & the IEI

Friday 27 October 2023, 12:30pm

As the Friends of the Crawford will remember, the Gallery is partly-situated in a former Customs house whose construction commenced in 1723, 300 years ago. The building has seen many changes and challenges since. In a former talk Tom described some of the historical events and personalities involved in these events, but in this lecture Tom shall describe the physical changes to the building, the roads not travelled and how we got the building we are so fond of today. This talk in collaboration with the IEI will set the scene for the proposed alterations and construction of the new Crawford Art Gallery building.

Cork’s Jewish Culture Past and Present with Ruti Lachs

Friday 3 November 2023, 12:30pm

The talk will be illuminated with artefacts from the culture and with traditional and original song and klezmer music.

This series will run for 4 consecutive weeks from Friday 13 October to Friday 3 November inclusive. Although places are limited, booking is not required for the talks with the exception of the IEI and Friends collaborative talk on Friday 27 October. To register for this talk please contact the Friends Office on:
