August in the Glucksman

August 2023 at the Glucksman

Welcome to the August edition of the Glucksman newsletter.

Join us in the gallery spaces this month for our new exhibition détour: Selected works from the FRAC Bretagne collection and a new season of educational courses for all ages and abilities, including Audio Described accessible tours for blind and visually impaired visitors.

We were honoured to receive a national award from the Heritage Council in Kilkenny recently, where the assessors praised The Art Library, an innovative approach to sharing art and knowledge driven by the principles of creativity, inclusion and participation. We celebrate Cork Heritage Open Day on 12 August with a special exploration of the art collections of University College Cork and Frac Bretagne and our Little Interview features insights from Etienne Bernard, Director of Frac Bretagne. We have also launched an open call to all craft makers and designers wishing to participate in this year's Craft + Design Fair so please spread the word to any creative makers you know who may wish to take part.

On 12 August, we also celebrate the opening of Léa's at the Glucksman, our fabulous new gallery restaurant that will serve simple, contemporary breakfast, brunch and lunch menus in the relaxing setting of the Lower Grounds.

We very much hope to welcome you to the galleries to explore our current shows, or online where we regularly post new learning and creative resources.

Curated by Chris Clarke

In 1956, the French artists Gil J. Wolman and Guy Debord proposed a guide to détournement, re-purposing advertisements and magazines as a means of subverting society. This practice, which included cutting up city maps to encourage unplanned excursions through the city of Paris, was a way to effect disorientation. As the writers stated: “not many people would remain unaffected by an exact reconstruction in one city of an entire neighbourhood of another.”

tour presents selected works from the collection of the FRAC Bretagne in Rennes, France. In addition to Gil J. Wolman’s 1960s collages, the exhibition includes artworks such as Raymond Hains’ photographs of signs found in rural villages, Vera Molnar’s computer-generated renderings of the Saint-Victoire mountain range, and Charlotte Moth’s filmed depiction of Parisian architecture. Thomas Teurlai and Ugo Schiavi’s display showcases scrolls of recovered graffiti samples, while Isabelle Arthuis’ evocative black-and-white images capture the landscape during a nocturnal eclipse. Through works by contemporary international artists, détour reimagines and reconstructs the FRAC Bretagne collection, transposed to Rennes’ sister city of Cork and the Glucksman’s unique architectural setting.

Join us on Cork Heritage Open Day as we explore the art collections of University College Cork and of FRAC Bretagne, on display at the Glucksman as part of the exhibition Détour: Selected works from the FRAC Bretagne Collection. The tour will start at the Glucksman museum and move to sites across the main university campus.

Léa's at the Glucksman

New restaurant opens on 12 August

A new restaurant is getting ready to officially open its doors on campus. Léa’s at the Glucksman will open on Saturday, 12 August 2023. Founded by Colm Liston, Joe Dowling and Cyprien Jouve, Léa’s is the sister restaurant of Joe’s + Bros. At Léa's, their aim is to create a high energy, daytime, breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant serving up simple, contemporary and quirky dishes to reflect the unique setting of the venue.

Welcoming the opening, Professor Fiona Kearney, Director of the Glucksman, said: “We are thrilled to announce the opening of the new restaurant Léas at the Glucksman – the delicious menu, contemporary design, and welcoming culture that will be provided by Cyprien, Colm, Joe and team are a hugely important part of the Glucksman experience. We are so grateful for the support we receive from across the UCC community, and hope that people will now visit for great food as well as great art!”

Behind the Scenes

Museum Standards Programme for Ireland Award

We were honoured to be awarded an official accreditation under the Heritage Council’s Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI), which was established to promote professional standards in museums. We were one of 13 museums to achieve this official accreditation, including our cork neighbours Nano Nagle Place and Cork Public Museum,

The Glucksman received a ‘Maintenance of Full Accreditation’ award which is a major accolade with accredited museums considered to have attained excellence across a range of areas. The assessor praised in particular a new initiative entitled The Art Library which features a dedicated group of items from the UCC art collection that is shared with local communities in venues as schools, healthcare centres and community hubs.

Lawrence O'Hana, Chair of The Glucksman Board of Directors, and Fiona Kearney, Director of The Glucksman, travelled to Kilkenny to receive the award in person at a special ceremony in Kilkenny Castle.
