MICHELLE DELEA: The Sprawling Octopus of an Elevated Highway (2022) until Sunday 10 September
In 1968, B.K.S. Traffic Consultants proposed an elevated highway for Cork city, with over 90 acres of demolition estimated for parking clearances in the central island area. The £16.5m construction, which was due to stretch from the Port to the Courthouse, Patrick’s Hill to Barrack Street, would have seen our city surrender to the motorcar. Michelle Delea's film interviews former architects of 'The City Seventy Planning Group', which emerged from the pioneering class of The Crawford School of Architecture. This group, supported by journalist Mary Leland, successfully campaigned against the B.K.S. Traffic Plan, preserving the character of the city as we know it today. This film is on show in our Screening Room. | | | Image: Jed Niezgoda
muscle: a question of power Until 20 August
It’s your last chance to experience muscle: a question of power at Crawford Art Gallery! Created by Anna Furse, this immersive experience takes visitors on an audio-guided journey through our historic collection of Canova Casts and culminates in a new film focusing on women’s muscularity. Designed to bring visitors up close and personal with these ancient Classical forms, muscle is an invitation to contemplate the idealised nude, and its legacy today. The audio-guide refers the spectator to their own body sensations, presence, and curiosity as they are invited to follow gentle but precise instructions to progress through the Sculpture Galleries. To experience muscle with a headset, visitors can select timed entry between 13:30 and 14:30 daily. Please pre-book your free 50-minute timed slot here. Alternatively, by scanning a QR code in the gallery space, visitors can use their own device and headphones outside of these hours. | | © Clare Langan, Flight from the City (still), 2015. New Acquisitions
We are delighted to share that Minister Catherine Martin has announced the acquisition of over 100 works of contemporary art to the NationalCollection! This was supported by an allocation of €1.5m from Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. To Crawford Art Gallery and the Irish Museum of ModernArt. The purpose of the award was to respond to significant gaps identified in the Collections of the National Cultural Institutions. These new additions to the National Collection will ensure that it is more representative of the diverse communities of contemporary Ireland. The new works include painting, sculpture, photography, installation, works on paper, digital media works and textiles, by both Irish and international artists. | | Image: Michael Waldron Harry Clarke, Work and Legacy: Conserving Crawford Art Gallery’s Stained Glass Panels Event Wednesday 16 August, 1pm

The Professor of Forgetting Book Launch Thursday 24 August, 5:30pm
Crawford Art Gallery will host the launch of a new book of poetry by Greg Delanty. The Professor of Forgetting, a new collection from the acclaimed Irish poet Greg Delanty, swings back and forth on the fulcrum of what we call “now” and confronts our notion of how time passes. From the very first poem, “Going Nowhere Fast”, which ponders whether we are nowhere or going nowhere, to the final selection, from which the book takes its self-reflective title, these exuberant poems chronicle what it means to be human with joy, pathos, honesty, despair, sorrow, celebration, and wit. Greg Delanty was born in Cork City, Ireland, and maintains dual citizenship inIreland and the United States, where he has lived since 1986.
