Age & Opportunity Free Course - Changing Gears - in Cork this April and May

 Age & Opportunity is delighted to be offering Changing Gears in Cork for free this April and May.  Designed to boost wellbeing and resilience, it is a five-session in-person course funded by HSE Ireland that focuses on managing transitions in mid to later life.

Changing Gears offers participants (aged 50+) time to:

• Develop skills and techniques to build resilience and confidence in managing life-changes or transitions.

• Reframe transitions in their lives as opportunities with positive options, challenging negative stereotypes about ageing.

The programme allows participants to reflect on challenges they have experienced in the past and life-lessons they have learned. In this way strategies for building resilience and managing change draw on personal experience to create a more positive and fulfilling future. 

Sessions cover: Life Transitions (Up to Now); Building Resilience (Here and Now); and Mapping the future (Where to from Here).

Venue: The Metropole, Cork

Dates: Thursdays 13, 20, 27 April and 4, 11 May 2023

Finally – some reviews for A Good Person! Shakefire said it is a “brutal and heartbreaking film, anchored by emotionally devastating performances by Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, that forces us to confront our grief but also leaves you with an offer of hope,” while Rolling Stone said “ Pugh has a way of reminding you why a close-up is the single best gift the moving pictures have given us.” This continues until Wednesday. You can also see Meet Me in the Bathroom until Wednesday, which the Times said “is an appropriately raw and urgent documentary about the music scene that flourished in New York after the fall of the Twin Towers.” From Sunday, we continue with An Cailín Ciúin because we’re giving as many people as possible the chance to watch this beautiful and impactful film. Another Irish Oscar nominee is also back – Paul Mescal in Aftersun – while we’re also showing Close, which the Times called an “authentic study of loss, buttressed by two extraordinary child actors, and complemented by a handful of impeccable adult players, most notably Émilie Dequenne...” Next week, on Thursday 6 April, you can enjoy two films as part of the East Asia Film Festival Ireland. This festival offers innovative, independent, and inspiring cinema from across East Asia, and presents works otherwise unavailable from both emerging and established filmmakers. Duhallow Carers Support Group 6th April Newmarket

Duhallow Carers Support Group provides peer support for carers, in a relaxing environment and to give  members a much needed break from their caring duties and most of all to up skill new carers and provide them with the relevant training and mentoring they need to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities.  The group meets on the first Thursday of each month to organise & facilitate these supports, equipping carers with the skills and the confidence to look after loved ones.   We would be delighted to met you at our next meting on Thursday 6th April at  8.00pm in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket. Mór Artist Collective Launching Wednesday April 5th from 7pm - 8:30pm, at Greywood Arts

Want to know Mór? The Mór Artists Collective is launching!

The Mór Artists Collective welcomes professional and emerging visual, performing, and literary artists living and working in the rural East Cork and West Waterford municipalities.

A launch event will be held on Wednesday April 5th from 7pm - 8:30pm, at Greywood Arts. Artists are invited to come and hear more about the collective network, and there will be an option to apply for membership on the night. 

The collective will meet monthly beginning in May to share work-in-progress, discuss their creative processes and to offer feedback. The meetings are a space to exchange ideas and skills, and to discuss what inspires its members. There will be guest speakers, creative practice workshops, and opportunities to showcase work throughout the year. The collective is a resource where artists can find out about local events, opportunities, funding and facilities.

The Mór Artists Collective is supported by a significant partnership with Waterford City and County Council and Cork County Council and facilitated by Greywood Arts.

68th Cork International Choral Festival 26 April – 30 April 2023

The 68th Cork International Choral Festival this month features very many free concerts across the city all listed here https://www.corkchoral.ie/festival_events/?_event_category=fringe-concert

If you would prefer to enjoy a shorter taster event - any 30 minutes in the Clayton Lapp's Quay from 1.30 - 6.00 on the Saturday or Sunday would be a good place to be.

About the Festival

Founded in 1954 to be a dynamic force in developing choral music in Ireland, the Cork International Choral Festival is held annually over the five days preceding the first Monday in May in venues across the city, centring around the City Hall, one of the most attractive and acoustically superb venues in Ireland.

One of Europe’s premier international choral festivals, Cork is noted for its high standards, eclectic and wide-ranging programme, and the friendliness of its welcome.

Cork welcomes choirs from across the world for a programme of Gala concerts, Schools Concerts, National and International Competitions, and world-class performances, as thousands of participants bring the city to life for a celebration of choral music in all its many forms.

Each year some of the finest amateur international choirs are selected to compete for the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy. The selected choirs also participate in a wide range of Festival events, which include Fringe concerts, taking part in our Church Interchange programme across Cork city and county, and informal Public Performances which see choirs popping up throughout Cork in new and unexpected locations throughout the duration of the Festival! The presence of these choirs from throughout the world gives audiences and Irish choirs alike the unique opportunity of hearing a diverse range of concerts and repertoire performed.

As well as foreign choirs, the Festival annually features up to 100 Adult, Youth and School choirs who participate in National Competitions. Overall the Festival attracts some 5,000 participants. The Festival continues to ensure that choral music, representative of many historical and cultural traditions, is brought to the people of Cork and the many visitors who we are delighted to welcome to the city for the event.
