 Exhibition : The Traveller History of the Black Ash

The Kinsale Road Roundabout and the Black Ash area were once an important place for nomadic Irish Travellers. Check out the Exhibition of the Black Ash Traveller Oral History project and the traditions and lives of the families who lived there. This Exhibition is presented by the Cork Traveller Women’s Network as part of the Lifelong Learning Festival.

Irish-Polish Exhibition on Great Famine

Paul Strzelecki’ struggle to save Irish children during the Great Famine, considers how a Polish man came to save thousands of Irish children during the Great Famine of the 1840s. Strzelecki learnt about the devastating impact of the potato blight. This motivated him to put his own life at risk. Strzelecki and his life in many ways embody the themes of emigration, nationalism, globalisation and humanitarianism which form our modern world.

A Cork Folklore Project Listening Evening : 'Circular Tales’

Slocking apples, chocolate crumb and collecting waste in 1940s to 1960s Cork City.

As part of the Lifelong Learning Festival and in conjunction with Ballyphehane Learning Neighbourhood, the Cork Folklore Project will share stories and memories from their archive of oral history interviews with Cork City people. To celebrate the launch of the project ‘Circular Tales’, they will present stories of how Cork City communities in the 1940s to 1960 stretched resources, earned extra money, and creatively appropriated all sorts of goods from chocolate crumb to apples to fish. Their colleagues from the Environmental Research Institute will respond in a reflection on how these memories are relevant to current concerns about ecological sustainability.

SITE OF CHANGE: Evolution of a Building

 As it prepares to embark upon a fourth century of development, it is timely to reflect on the evolution of Crawford Art Gallery’s site, building, and function from 1724 to the present. This exhibition explores how the building has changed with the times. Repurposed from its original role as Custom House, it has operated as a School of Art, Municipal Art Gallery, and National Cultural Institution. At each shift in purpose, it has adapted and grown in response to the needs of the city and people of Cork, Munster, and Ireland. SITE OF CHANGE draws together images and objects from across the centuries that express this much-loved building’s former and present appearance, as well as its role in the city’s cultural life

Artists’ Film International 2022

Artists’ Film International (AFI) is a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation from around the world. Established by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2008, AFI includes global partner organisations. Each organisation selects an exciting recent work by an artist from their region which is shared amongst the network. Here, in the dedicated screening room of Crawford Art Gallery, films will be shown in a looped presentation of three to four films changing every five weeks. The films currently screening until Sunday 8 January are:

Tour of RADHARC: Perspectives in Print as Gaeilge

Crawford Art Gallery is delighted to announce a new tour of the Gallery including our new exhibition RADHARC: Perspectives in Print presented through Irish. Drawn from our extensive print collection, this exhibition is mediated through bilingual (Gaeilge/English) signage and offers a cross-section of printmaking over the past hundred years. The tour will be free to all and will last approximately 45 minutes in length. Tour guide Billy Lingwood is a Graduate of  the Limerick School of Art and Design with a BA Hons. Billy specialises in printmaking, allowing him to bring a unique perspective to this tour of our print exhibition. The meeting point for this tour is in the Sculpture Galleries This tour takes place at 2:30pm and will last approximately 45 minutes. Free but requires booking, reserve your space here.

Music at Middy returns to Crawford Art Gallery this Sunday! Directed by Jerry Creedon, “Guitar Plus” is a professional-level performing guitar ensemble based at MTU Cork School of Music. The group specialises in exciting and colourful works composed and arranged for multiple guitars, and performs regularly in the community in an effort to expand the audience base and promote an appreciation for classical guitar music. The members of “Guitar Plus” are all senior students and graduates of MTU Cork School of Music with the group providing a valuable ensemble experience for guitarists of diverse backgrounds whilst maintaining musical excellence. Cork Storyteller Anna Stack’s Pop-Up Exhibition in Cork City Library

8 Feb – 8 March 2023

Anna Stack is a young autistic illustrator from East Cork. She creates illustrated stories and in her most recent story an animal character called Squirrely explores how to manage a big change. Anna invites children and their adults to visit her exhibition space in Cork City Library to see drawings for her new book Squirrely’s Baby Sister. Squirrely’s Baby Sister was published by Cork City Library in November 2022 using Dormant Account Funds, with the support of the @nlnireland, SECAD and Crawford Supported Studio. The book is available at all city centre library branches.  Anna is a member of Crawford Supported Studios (CSS), which centres disabled artists. Local Colour for SIRIUS: Selected Works from the Archives and Collection

Local Colour for SIRIUS: Selected Works from the Archives and Collection features works and materials from the SIRIUS archives and collection, uncovered during research and cataloguing undertakings initiated in 2021. From its significant architectural and social history as the former headquarters of the Royal Cork Yacht Club to its current programme, SIRIUS interrogates traditional ideas of building a collection. The items in the care of SIRIUS reveal – even if only sometimes partially – the richness of the institution’s holdings, and are a rich resource for artists, researchers, members of the community, and wider audiences.

Researcher Tom Spalding offers a lively, illustrated tour of SIRIUS, examining the way the building's rooms were used in the past, some of the people who lived there, the different meanings of the materials and finishes it is constructed from, and the changes it has undergone in the last 169 years.

SIRIUS has never been regarded as a collecting entity by its governing bodies, stakeholders, or audiences. Yet it is the custodian of the 1850s architectural drawings for the clubhouse of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the building it occupies, and miscellaneous documents related to its transition from that function into an art centre. In addition, since its foundation in the mid-1990s, it has accessioned works through donations by artists who exhibited and/or were in residence, and more recently through commissions for artists to respond to Cobh and/or County Cork’s context.

At the core of Local Colour for SIRIUS: Selected Works from the Archives and Collection are the 1850s architectural drawings for the clubhouse of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, reproduced from the originals after treatment and conservation carried out by Muckross House technicians in 2021 on behalf of SIRIUS. Also presented is documentation of the building’s poor condition in the mid-1980s and the efforts conducted by local enthusiasts, led by curator Peter Murray, to rescue it and create a new cultural site.

This exhibition is curated by Miguel Amado, director, with Andrea Spörri, curatorial trainee. Its production has been supported, in different stages and activities, by the Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2021, Heritage Council; the Regional Museum Exhibitions Scheme 2022, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media; and the Engaging with Architecture Scheme 2021, Arts Council.

Vanbrugh and Friends at The Mall Arts Centre Youghal

Come along and experience the symphonic and classical music of Vanbrugh and friends in the intimate setting of The Mall Arts Centre. Join the ensemble and allows yourself to really focus in and feel what each individual musician and performer is trying to convey. Every player has their own, individual part to play; and, at the same time, the handful of players learn to work together to play as ONE

The Vanbrugh and their guests present two of the greats from the extended chamber music repertoire. Beethoven’s Op.29 string quintet, nicknamed ‘The Storm’, was written in 1801, shortly after his Op.18 string quartets and combines his mastery of quartet writing with the expansive richness of texture offered by the addition of a second viola. Tchaikovsky’s epic string sextet ‘Souvenir de Florence’ from 1892 adds a second cello into the mix and from the first bar the music pulsates with intensity and energy.

February at the Glucksman

The Glucksman is marking the beginning of Spring with a number of upcoming events in the gallery including a Mid-term Art Club for creative kids, our Family Sundays drop-in workshops and a free lunchtime talk with artist Rachel Goodyear. See https://www.glucksman.org/

We are into the final weeks of our current exhibition A Line Around An Idea: ways of knowing through contemporary drawing practices, which our visitors have described as "fantastic", "impressive" and "striking". February also sees the celebration of UCC Refugee Week and we are proud to present the outcome of the All Together project in our showcase gallery.

Our Art Library initiative is very much nationwide with the Viewpoints children's collection touring in public libraries around the Fingal area in Dublin and artist Amber Broughton's delivering creative sessions in tandem with her works on display in rural schools in Kerry. A Line Around an Idea: Ways of Knowing through Contemporary Drawing Practices

Drawing is used across a wide range of disciplines as a foundational way of learning, sharing and generating knowledge. It is exploratory and experimental, a means of sketching out plans and articulating ideas, line by line.

This exhibition features work by contemporary artists and architects whose practices demonstrate how drawing can be a creative - and disruptive - force, a way of knowing the world through observation, but also a medium that can redraw the lines to present different histories and representations.

All Together

A European Solidarity Corps Project with UCC Failte Refugees Society

In 2022, the Glucksman teamed up with UCC Failte Refugees Society to run a yearlong project with young asylum seekers called All Together. This is a project that provides creative opportunities for young asylum seekers living in the rural, isolated Direct Provision centre in Clonakilty, West Cork. The All Together project has the twin objectives of providing meaningful, creative experiences for this disadvantaged community and increasing the visibility of refugees and migrants in society.

The teenagers, students and artists are currently working together on an exciting outcome moment for UCC Refugee Week 2023 (20 - 26 February 2023).
