2024 Ellen Hutchins Festival 17th to 25th August West Cork
The 2024 Ellen Hutchins Festival starts on Saturday 17th August and runs to Sunday 25th August with events around Bantry, Glengarriff, Ballylickey, Ballydehob, Kealkill, Whiddy Island and Sheep’s Head Peninsula.
Click HERE to see a list of events including booking details for individual events.
Inspired by Ireland’s first female botanist, the Ellen Hutchins Festival takes place in and around Bantry Bay, West Cork every August. Ellen was born in Ballylickey in 1785 and the inaugural festival was initiated to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her death in 2015. The festival is now an annual event, taking place over nine days each year during Heritage Week.
The festival includes a wide range of events designed to encourage people of all ages to explore the natural and cultural heritage of Bantry Bay. Many are free, some have an entry fee.
During this year’s festival there are botany walks and workshops, seashore and seaweed activities, botanical art and craft workshops, poetry and literary events, a geology walk, children’s art and nature events, archives to view at Bantry Library, a talk by writer and broadcaster Anja Murray, self-guided trails and live demonstrations of botanical art and basket-making.

Seaweeds and Traditions: A Heritage Special at the Bantry Show
See and explore seaweed and find out how it was collected, carried, used, studied and drawn in the past. The Ellen Hutchins Festival comes to Bantry Show with a range of free activities and demonstrations. See a wonderful range of seaweeds, including hidden details under a microscope or through a hand lens. Handle replicas of the large baskets, called creels, used to gather seaweeds. Hear Frances Gallagher, the Festival’s seaweed specialist, explain past and current uses of seaweeds.
Historical re-enactor, Carrie O’Flynn, in costume of the early 1800s, will invite you to try writing with a quill pen, folding your letter and sealing it. Leading Irish botanical artist, Shevaun Doherty, will be painting seaweed while chatting about watercolours now and 200 years ago. Youngsters can dip into a nature art activity with leaves and wax crayons.
Pick up free leaflets on seaweeds, mosses, lichens and trees and browse a range of books to buy on the botany of inner Bantry Bay. Speak to the Festival team about the other events.

Michael Collins Diaries return to Clonakilty
After a hugely successful exhibition in August 2022 and 2023, Cork County Council in partnership with the National Archives brings the Michael Collins Diaries 1918-1922 back to Michael Collins House Museum, Clonakilty for August 2024.
This year, the exhibition will focus on August 1922, with the original diary pages for the first six days of August 1922 on display.
The pages detail his daily schedule, meetings and ‘to do’ lists giving an invaluable insight into his day-to-day life. From a note to contact the quarter master about army mattresses, to meetings to attend, calls to make and what could be read as an essential list of items to pack for a forthcoming trip.
The diary pages will be accompanied by a recent donation to the National Archives of draft telegrams written by Collins on 15 August 1922.
On the 15 August Michael Collins started his day in Limerick Head Quarters with a meeting to ascertain details of the transport available to him after his journey to the south which had been filled with car trouble. The text of these two telegrams shows how frustrated Collins was by the time he reached Cork later that afternoon. Undoubtedly, he was eager to return to Dublin for Griffith's funeral the following day.
The diaries have undergone significant conservation and preservation treatment, archival processing, and digitisation at the National Archives. The exhibition also includes an interactive touchscreen device on which all five diaries can be viewed.
The diaries are on loan to the National Archives by the family of the late Liam and Betty Collins, Clonakilty, Cork.
The National Archives gratefully acknowledges the gift of the telegram notes to the State by Ms. Maureen Coughlan, Florida, USA.
fEast Cork September in Midleton
fEast Cork 2024 8th of September
fEast Cork 2024 takes place on the 8th of September, again based in the market town of Midleton with its rich food heritage but with a strong focus on the wider region, and will once again be a food and drink festival with a sure sense of place. A festival that happens at harvest time – appropriately for a gathering up and bringing together of the best of what the area has to offer – fEast Cork is a fresh blend of conversations, dinners, markets, foraging, mixology, produce, producers, landscape, heritage and storytelling.
Bringing together a host of hardworking, innovative food producers from all over this landscape that is largely defined by food production and food heritage, fEast Cork is a celebration and showcase that mixes the old and new, the traditional and the innovative.
From the individual and small-scale but crucial producers, farmers, fishermen and cooks in the region that add layers of authenticity and history to the community, to the ethos originally created by Myrtle Allen at Ballymaloe House and Cookery School that has become a global force of nature that can be felt in the best kitchens from Sydney to San Francisco, East Cork resounds with a genuine sense of celebration of the local, the seasonal, the real. fEast Cork capitalises on and magnifies that shared ethos and those shared values in the most celebratory way.
Jameson Whiskey and Midleton Whiskey’s meteoric rise in the US and world-wide over the last decade all comes from the historic handsome distillery that the festival team pass on the way to work each day in Midleton. Irish Distillers’ own real connection with the East Cork landscape around them explains their significant support for the festival – barley grown by East Cork farmers and East Cork river water are ingredients that have helped put their whiskeys on the map, and now they in turn help raise the profile of the producers of the entire region through their generous festival sponsorship.
fEast Cork has grown from the strong roots put down by the Midleton Food Festival, and now this harvest celebration holds out its arms to the wider region, creating new coordinates for this vibrant young festival, coordinates that they hope will shine brighter each year on the food festival map of Ireland – coordinates that are pure fEast Cork.

Liam O'MaonlaíWEdnesday august 14th 8pmWe are delighted to welcome back Hot House Flowers frontman and multi talented musical virtuoso Liam O'Maonlaí! Liam O'Maonlaí is one of the most talented, charismatic and soulful performers of Irish traditional music today. Born and raised in Dublin, his first songs were taught to him by his father in his native language, while his mother was an accomplished pianist who was guided by her own father in Galway as she grew up. Liam was educated mostly by Connemara teachers, who left a strong impression on his outlook on life language and attitude: “'The people of Connemara, Kerry,Donegal, Mayo and Ring never lost their connection to language . There is an unbroken consciousness and connection to land and creation there”. Traditional and roots music has always been the foundation of Liam ó Maonlaí's direction in his art, and his band Hothouse Flowers (founded in 1988) reflected that and continue to do so to this day, gaining critical acclaim worldwide for their work in the popular music idiom. Apart from the band, Liam has focused his energy on traditional music at home and abroad. His first album 'Rian' is a collection of music and songs indigenous to his mother country. He has worked with artists from all over the world, including Afel Boucoum, Toumani Diabate and Oumou Sangare from Mali; Guo Yue from China, and Joji Hirota from Japan. Teać Damhsa (formerly 'Fabulous Beast' Dance Theatre) joined forces with Liam to create the stage show 'Rian', which toured the world for over two years. This show tapped into the great work of Séan Ó Riada, marrying his traditional music with the contemporary movement of dancers from Ghana, Nigeria, Finland, Greece, Ukraine and England, and revealing a deep sense of the essence of his own relationship to the music of his people. Liam continues to compose and perform with his band and to collaborate with musicians of many genres and cultures.
